Chi Gung and Nei Gung

The term "Chi Gung" is used to cover all forms of oriental exercise for health, healing, power and mental clarity.

There are however two distinct kinds of exercises:

  1. Chi Gung - which works from the outside of the body inwards.
  2. Nei Gung - which works from the inside of the body outwards.

Chi Gung first works on the outer meridians and through these affects the core energy, as in acupuncture. It uses the breath as a vehicle to move the chi, activating one or two energy lines at a time.

Nei Gung concentrates on working and developing the core energy and then opening and energising all the chi lines of the body simultaneously. The breath may or may not be synchronised with the flow of chi as the chi is moved directly by the mind.

The main difference between Chi Gung and Nei Gung is that in Chi Gung component 'a' is followed by component 'b' and then 'c' etc. This has the effect of 'a' + 'b' + 'c'. Nei Gung works components 'a' and 'b' and 'c' at the same time having the effect of 'a' x 'b' x 'c'.

Chi Gung can be used to heal specific problems whilst Nei Gung is generally used to develop overall health, strength and flexibility

These chi gung/nei gung systems comprise the internal workings of Tai Chi and Ba Gua. Tai Chi and Ba Gua can be learnt simultaneously to the Chi/Nei Gung systems.
